Introduces the historical and social basis of international relations or IR. The aim of the chapter is to emphasize the practical reality of international relations in our everyday lives and to connect that practical reality with the academic study of international relations.

The chapter makes that connection by focusing on the core historical subject-matter of IR: modern sovereign states and the international relations of the state system. Three main topics are discussed: the significance of international relations in everyday life and the main values that states exist to foster, the historical evolution of the state system and world economy in brief outline, and the changing contemporary world of states.
